FORT MOHAVE -At long last, the groundbreaking for the Fort Mohave Walmart Super-center is within sight.

"We have awarded the con-struction contract. The general contractor is mobilizing now," said Delia Garcia, Walmart spokeswoman

R&O Construction Inc. of Ogden, Utah, will begin con-struction "over the next couple of weeks," Garcia said.

There will be an official groundbreaking in September at a date to be announced, she said.

The 155,000-square-foot store at 5210 Highway 95 will employ 300 people, full-and part-time, and will include a supermarket and a "Tire & Lube Express."
Ground-breaking was origi-nally set for the summer of 2014 with an opening in the spring of 2015. The project was then rescheduled to break ground in June 2015, after its traffic plans for the Highway 95 and Ham-mer Lane intersection were approved by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Walmart waited in vain last summer for neighboring Valley View Medical Center's parent company, LifePoint Health, to grant 288 square feet of right of waytoADOT. Traffic plans were revised to eliminate the need for the Val-ley View parcel and those plans were recently approved by ADOT, giving Walmart the green light to proceed. "We project opening in spring 2017 ," Garcia said.

Fort Mohave and Mohave Valley developers are looking forward to the opening of the new store, confident it will encourage commercial growth in the area. The store will be competing with the Bullhead City store, which will remain open at 2840 Highway 95.

When .the city of Bullhead City works on its budget next year for 2017-18, it will allow for a loss of sales tax revenue from the Bullhead City Walmart.
"The city has been planning for the opening of the Walmart in Fort Mohave for many years," said City Manager Toby Cotter. "It will take some incremental business away from the existing Walmart, which impact sales tax collection in the city."
